Rohit Sharma is India’s current captain in all three formats. However, the right-handed batsman took over full captaincy duties only this year, when Virat Kohli stepped down as captain in all formats.
Some players struggled to perform well under the new captain, Rohit Sharma. They did, however, perform admirably under Virat Kohli. Here are five such players who excelled under Virat Kohli but struggled under Rohit Sharma.

The first player on this list is Mayank Agarwal. The right-handed batsman is an India Test specialist. Agarwal scored 353 runs in four Tests in 2021, averaging 44.12. He also slammed 1 tonne and 2 fifties. However, under Rohit Sharma in 2022, Agarwal only managed 130 runs in 7 innings at an average of 18.57.
Another player on this list is Rishabh Pant. If we look at Rishabh Pant’s T20I career, we can see that he performed better under Virat Kohli but not so well under Rohit Sharma.
In 2021, the left-handed batsman scored 213 runs at an average of 30.42 in 10 T20Is. However, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in 2022, the wicketkeeper-batsman scored 364 runs in 21 games at an average of just 21.34.
KL Rahul is another player who performed under Virat Kohli but failed to perform well under Rohit Sharma. KL Rahul’s Test career includes 461 runs in 10 Tests last year at an average of 43.12 under skipper Virat Kohli.
However, the right-handed batter only scored 80 runs in two Tests in 2022, with an average of 20.0. As a result, KL Rahul’s Test performance suffered under skipper Rohit Sharma.
Another Indian player on this list is Washington Sundar. Last year, under skipper Virat Kohli, the right-arm spinner took four wickets in four games at an economy rate of 8.90. Sundar had a good performance the previous year as well, picking up 6 wickets in 7 games at an economy of 7.80.
Sundar, on the other hand, only took one wicket in the one T20I game he played this year. In the match, he also conceded runs at an economy rate of 12.0 and was dropped from the playing XI.
Another name on this list is Axar Patel. If we look at Axar Patel’s Test career, we can see that he performed better under Virat Kohli than under Rohit Sharma. Last year, the left-arm spinner averaged 11.86 wickets in 10 Test innings.
However, he took three wickets in two Test innings this year, with an average of 19.33. He was also absent from several Test series.
